Bermudians love to drink—there was even a song with that title released by a local artist in 2005. They also love to drink and drive, though media pressure and police crackdowns in the past 20 years have somewhat curtailed the habit. Don’t be tempted to hop on a scooter after a few black rums or Elephant beers; many visitors (and locals) have been killed or badly injured over the years doing just that (16 people were killed on Bermuda’s roads in 2008 alone). But do enjoy Bermuda’s bars; they must rank among the most lively in the world, particularly in the busy crush of summer. Happy hours are prevalent, with cheaper drink prices offered for a couple of hours after work, usually on Friday. A full wine list and a good choice of beers, cocktails, and liqueurs can be found at most drinking establishments and licensed restaurants. National favorites Black ’n’ Coke (black rum—preferably Gosling’s Black Seal—and Coca-Cola) and Cockspur ’n’ Coke are party staples.
