Bermuda’s charities and nonprofit organizations depend heavily on volunteers to carry out much of their day-to-day workload. Very often, unpaid volunteers are retired or wealthy Bermudians, or the spouses of expatriate workers who don’t hold work permits themselves and are looking for social and professional interaction after they move to the island. From walking the canine residents of the SPCA to providing CPR instruction to staffing the front desk at an art gallery, volunteers keep the island running smoothly. If you are visiting Bermuda for an extended period and would like to get involved, check the charities’ listings in the Bermuda Yellow Pages, or contact the Centre on Philanthropy (Par-la-Ville Rd., Hamilton, tel. 441/292-5320) to find out which organizations are in need of extra help.
