Columbia [1] keeps a nice balance of the old and the new. We’ll start with a look at the historic house museums, including some of the precious few homes to survive the Union burning of the city, and move on to some of the more wide-ranging and contemporary offerings of South Carolina’s capital.

While our “must-see [2]” picks are limited here to specific attractions, any local will tell you that no trip to Columbia is complete without stops at Five Points and the Congaree Vista (more often, “The Vista”), both downtown.
