The Oak Manor Inn (314 E. Home Ave., 843/383-9553, $85) is the town’s main B&B. They cater mostly to business travelers, but it’s still a quality stay for casual visitors. The Fairfield Inn Hartsville (200 S. 4th St., 843/332-9898, www.marriott.com [1], $99–109) is a well-run chain hotel right downtown.
The main hangout in Hartsville [2] is the eclectic Midnight Rooster (136 E. Carolina Ave., 843/383-0800, http://bellsouthpwp.net/d/a/darooster/ [3], Mon.–Sat. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Thurs.–Fri. 5:30–9:30 p.m., $7–10), a combined coffeehouse, eatery, sushi bar, and live music spot. Note the odd hours.
A good place for barbecue here is Shug’s Smokehouse (2404 Kelleytown Rd., 843/383-3747, www.shugssmokehouse.com [4], Tues.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sat. 5–10 p.m., $10–20).
