The beginning of the state’s “South Carolina Cotton Trail” tourist route (www.sccottontrail.com [1]), Bishopville began at the intersection of two old Indian trails, known to early colonists as Singleton’s Crossroads.
It got its current name in 1888 when it was named after leading citizen Dr. Jacques Bishop. Its most famous native is “Doc” Blanchard, star running back for the dominant Army football teams of the 1940s.
