Little Pee Dee State Park

Scenic and convenient to I-95, Little Pee Dee State Park (1298 State Park Rd., 843/774-8872, www.southcarolinaparks.com [1], daily 9 a.m.–9 p.m., free) near Dillon is one of South Carolina [2]’s most well-rounded and enjoyable state parks, though it is pretty much isolated from the rest of the state.

Anglers and naturalists can enjoy not only the blackwater Little Pee Dee itself, but a 54-acre, largely intact Carolina Bay. Rent a boat with a trolling motor for $25 a day, or a canoe or kayak for $12 a day.

A fun hike is the short trail to Beaver Pond, where you might see—you guessed it—some beavers. There are 32 campsites with electricity and water ($13) and 18 designated tent sites ($10).
