The town of Moncks Corner, seat of Berkeley County, is at the southern tip of Lake Moultrie [1] at the headwaters of the Cooper River and is a gateway of sorts to the greater Charleston [2] area.
Moncks Corner isn’t awash in world-class lodging, but you might try the Holiday Inn Express (505 Rembert C. Dennis Blvd., Moncks Corner, 843/761-7509, $100–140).
If you get hungry while you’re here, your best bet is to go for seafood at Gilligan’s at the Dock (582 Dock Rd., Moncks Corner, 843/761-2244, Sun.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., $12–20). They have awesome fried catfish and a nice view of the Cooper River.
