Parque da Luz

Adjacent to the Pinacoteca do Estado [1] and Parque da Luz (Praça da Luz, Luz, tel. 11/3227-3545, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun.) is São Paulo [2]’s oldest public garden. Upon its completion in 1825, Parque da Luz quickly became the favorite playground of the city’s elite, who enjoyed strolling among its ponds, bandstands, and fig trees, eucalyptus, and imperial palms. In more recent times, the park was taken over by homeless people, junkies, and prostitutes.

After a recent restoration—which included the introduction of a sculpture garden and beefed-up security—a few prostitutes still discreetly show off their wares, but Parque da Luz is also popular with families, couples in love, and those seeking some bucolic respite.
