Cuiabá [1]’s bar scene is concentrated in the center, around Avenida Getúlio Vargas and Avenida Mato Grosso. Most bars serve food and you can count on them for dinner as well as drinks. Choppão (Praça 8 de Abril, Goaibeiras, tel. 65/3623-9101, www.choppao.com.br [2], 10 a.m.–close daily) is a classic hangout that’s been around since 1974. Aside from the cavernous restaurant-bar with its wood-beamed ceiling, there is an outdoor patio that’s great for people-watching. The menu is extensive (a mixture of regional specialties and more standard fare), the portions are enormous, and the chopp is famously icy.
More upscale is Haus Bier (Av. Mato Grosso 1000, tel. 65/3027-2000, 5 p.m.–close Mon.–Fri., 11 a.m.–close Sat.–Sun.), a fashionable restaurant-bar frequented by a youngish crowed. Aside from the tasty local and international fare, this is a comfortable place to kick back with a house-brewed beer and listen to live music.
