Housing an exceptional modern-art collection, the Museo de Arte Hermila Domínguez de Castellanos (Av. Central 51, tel. 963/632-2082, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Sun., US$0.50) is a welcome surprise. The artwork is showcased on two floors—temporary exhibits are on the 1st floor—and features mostly distinguished Oaxacan and Chiapanecan painters and sculptors.
Near the entrance is a small room with three paintings by Rufino Tamayo, one of Mexico’s most accomplished artists. The museum is named after the daughter of Dr. Belisario Domínguez, whose own museum is just a few doors down.
