For the most part, people come to Omoa [1] for a bit of seaside relaxation. But visitors who want to explore what lies beneath the sea can contact Omoa Divers (tel. 504/9909-5592, www.omoadivers.com [2]), the first and only dive school in town. The PADI instructor offers everything from Open Water through Rescue certification in German, English, and Spanish.
A 20-minute boat ride carries divers to the southern tip of the famed Belizean Reef, where there are 20 or 30 dive sites, including the remains of some Spanish galleons. With its strong surface currents, however, this area is only recommended for experienced divers. At the beach head right, to the end of the road, and the dive shop is located in the restaurant Macarela.
Banana boats and covered lanchas offer five- to ten-minute rides in the bay for US$1.50 per person.
With its sheltered cove, Omoa [1] offers an excellent harbor for boaters. Only during the rare northeast wind are conditions bad. The port captain (tel. 504/658-9274 or 504/991-6110, radio channels 16 and 28), located on the main road, is open 24 hours a day. There are no fees for boats entering the harbor or for docking.
Travelers with kids may be interested in checking out the water park near the entrance to town.
