One choice breakfast spot in town is Rudy’s (6 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun.–Fri.), next to Georphi’s hotel [1], where the owner, if he’s there, will serve you up a steaming cup of coffee and invariably reply heartily, “Still alive!” when you ask how he’s doing. The response is so famous it appears on a specially made T-shirt. The omelets are excellent (you pick the fixings), US$2–4. The smoothies (US$4) are outrageously priced if you’re used to mainland licuados, but good nonetheless.
Conveniently located in the center of West End [2], Jitters (8 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 8 a.m.–noon Sun.) serves up a nice latte, as well as refreshing iced coffees and smoothies, and a few snacks such as heavenly peanut-butter brownies (US$2–3.50 each).
The Bakery #2 (7 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Sat.) is famous for its filling breakfasts, including French toast with housemade bread, and sandwiches, salads, and burgers are available at midday (US$5–8). The best seats in the house are on its small waterfront veranda.
