While Parque Nacional Santa Bárbara [1] is often accessed from the villages near the town of Santa Bárbara [2], it’s also possible to explore via San Luis de Planes, a small town 14.5 kilometers west from the Cañaveral–Peña Blanca road.
Ornithologist Malcolm Glasgow, based at the D&D Brewery [3], is happy to take naturalists on guided bird tours of the cloud forest for US$16–32 per person, including a stop for coffee in the village (D&D can pack a lunch for you). Sketch maps are on the back of the D&D Brewery, and hikes through the cloud forest make for a great day out.
