Six blocks west of the parque central [1] is the attractive but slightly seedy Parque Herrera, in front of which stands the Teatro Nacional Manuel Bonilla (tel. 504/222-4366), inaugurated in 1916 and built at the behest of the eponymous general. Bonilla tried to get the theater built during his first administration in 1906, but a flood swept the new building away, and he had to wait until he returned to power to see the building inaugurated, 10 years later.
The facade is reputedly designed in the style of the Athenée of Paris, and the ornate interior is crowned by a panoramic painting of the Tegucigalpa [2] valley from the mountain of El Berrinche by famed Honduran painter Carlos Zuñiga Figueroa.
Teatro Nacional Manuel Bonilla seats 600 in rows on the ground floor and box seats above. For information on upcoming performances, ask at the box office or check local newspapers. If you can’t make a show, check if the doors are open and peek inside for a glimpse of the beautifully restored interior.
At the northwest corner of the park is La Iglesia El Calvario, dating from the mid-18th century and housing several retablos and an image of the Virgen de la Soledad.
