On the top of Montaña El Picacho off the road to El Hatillo, Parque Naciones Unidas (8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily) commands views over the entire Tegucigalpa Valley. Opened in the 1940s, the pine-forested park is a fine place to escape the noise of the city for a while and breathe clean air. Parque Naciones Unidas also features a frequently used soccer field, a small zoo, a children’s play area, and (the most recent addition) the Cristo del Picacho, similar in style to the Christ statue over the harbor in Río de Janeiro.
Buses to El Picacho leave from behind Los Dolores church on Sunday only—during the week, take an El Hatillo bus, get off at the intersection, and walk 1.5 kilometers into the park, or take a cab, which should cost about US$5 from downtown. Park entrance is US$1.
On the way to Parque Naciones Unidas, just under a kilometer from the turnoff from Avenida Jeréz, is the imposing white Universidad Católica de Honduras building, visible from around the city. The wide-open university parking lot makes a great place not too far from downtown to catch views over Tegucigalpa [1].
