In the Caribbean, the three main Bay Islands [1] (Islas de la Bahía) of Utila [2], Roatán [3], and Guanaja [4], plus many smaller cays, are considered a continuation of the Sierra de Omoa, a northeast-trending mountain range that meets the Caribbean west of Puerto Cortés [5]. Farther north are the smaller Swan Islands (Islas del Cisne), also thought to be part of the same geological formation.
Honduras [6] owns several small islands in the Golfo de Fonseca (Gulf of Fonseca), the largest of which are Isla del Tigre [7] and Isla Zacate Grande, both eroded volcanoes at the southern end of a mountain chain that begins in El Salvador.
