One of the oldest theaters in the Western Hemisphere is Teatro Tapia (Calle Fortaleza at Plaza de Colón, Old San Juan, 787/721-0180 or 787/721-0169), a lovely Romantic-style building constructed in 1824 and renovated in 1987. Named after Puerto Rican playwright Alejandro Tapia y Rivera, the 642-seat theater still hosts a variety of performance art events.
