Centro 23 del Septiembre Plaza (Calle Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos, off Carr. 111) is the central plaza in Lares [1] and it is a testament to the town’s brief independence from Spain’s rule. In the plaza is a tamarind tree that was planted by beloved independence leader Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos in soil from several independent Spanish-speaking countries. Legend has it that when the tree bears an abundant amount of fruit, Puerto Rico [2] will be free again.
