Luquillo is renowned for its breathtakingly beautiful public beach, most commonly referred to as Playa Luquillo [1], although its proper name is Balneario La Monserrate. Many consider this the finest beach on the main island, and its proximity to San Juan [2] makes it one of the most popular among visitors.
Unfortunately, Luquillo’s town center has undergone a recent renovation that has transformed its uncommonly large plaza into a modernist concrete pad with nary a tree in sight. There’s little reason to tarry here, except to stop by Victor’s Place for a stellar seafood meal.
Instead, head over to the coastal side of town, where you’ll find great swimming, surfing, and the island’s popular array of kiosks [3] selling fabulous fried fare for a pittance.
