Paseo Atocha is a pedestrian part of Calle Atocha between Calle Isabel at Plaza de Las Delicias [1] and Calle Vives. The sidewalk is lined by a variety of shops selling shoes, clothing, jewelry, electronics, discount housewares, sewing notions, and tourist trinkets. On weekends, Friday–Sunday, the sidewalk fills with street vendors selling flowers, lottery tickets, gift wrap and cards, sewing notions, tourist trinkets, and more.
Pick up a bag of locally grown coffee roasted on the premises of Café Mayor (2638 Calle Mayor at Calle Aurora, 787/812-1941, Mon.–Fri. 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Three roasts are available, but the French roast is the best.
Mi Coqui (9227 Calle Marina, facing Plaza de Las Delicias, 787/841-0216, daily 9 a.m.–7 p.m.) is a two-level wonder. Downstairs is a large, densely packed trinket shop where you can find some low-end, locally made crafts, as well as bottles of rum and bags of coffee. But request access to go upstairs and you’ll find a large gallery filled with original artwork, both traditional and contemporary, including oil paintings; vejigante masks; and the highly collectible Santos, small hand carved saints.
Utopia (14 Calle Isabel, 787/848-5441, fax 787/813-9899, daily 7 a.m.–6 p.m.) is a huge souvenir and import gift shop selling T-shirts, jewelry, and beachwear. There’s also a small lunch counter serving coffee and sandwiches.
