Puerto Rico [1]’s easy accessibility from the States and the compact lay of the land make it a great place to go for a long weekend. Many visitors simply fly into San Juan [2] and stay there. There are plenty of great restaurants, nightclubs, shops, beaches, and historical sights within walking or taxi distance. A reliable bus transit system and a new rail line called Tren Urbano provide inexpensive transportation throughout the city. It’s understandable why some visitors are hesitant to leave behind the capital city’s charms.
But escaping the bustle of the city and experiencing the island’s unique natural beauty is highly recommended and easily achieved. Car-rental agencies are plentiful, and the roads are well marked and maintained. Because the island is so small, it’s possible to make a day trip to any sight on the island. Just keep in mind that Puerto Rico [1] has a high volume of traffic, which can slow your progress. Travel through the central mountain region especially can take longer than might be expected because of the narrow winding roads. Always figure in extra travel time when planning a road trip.
