Because of its verdant natural beauty, Puerto Rico [1] has become something of a golf mecca for travelers. There are more than 20 courses on the island, most of them resort courses that tend to be upgraded and improved on a regular basis. The majority of courses are located on the eastern side of the island from Dorado in the north to Humacao [2] on the southeast coast.
Puerto Rico hosted its first PGA tour, the Puerto Rico Open, in 2008 at the Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande. The island’s best known professional golfer is Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez. The story has it that the PGA Hall of Famer was first introduced to the game when he was a child working as a water carrier on a sugar plantation and discovered golf caddies were better paid.
