Most likely due to the predominant influence of the Catholic church in Puerto Rican society, homosexuality is illegal on the island; however, the law is rarely, if ever, enforced. Despite Puerto Rico [1]’s strong patriarchal society in which a traditional sense of manhood is highly prized, homosexuality is generally accepted across the board, even in rural areas. In fact, San Juan [2] is something of a mecca for the LGBT traveler. There are many hotels and nightclubs that cater specifically to a gay and lesbian clientele, and certain beaches are known to attract a gay crowd. San Juan is also a popular port of call for gay cruises.
