Puerto Rico [1]’s form of currency is the U.S. dollar, which is sometimes referred to as peso. Full-service banks with ATMs are plentiful, the most common one being Banco Popular. Banking hours are Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Credit cards and debit cards are accepted virtually everywhere. The only time cash is required is when buying items from roadside vendors and occasionally even they will accept plastic.
A sales tax, between 5.5 percent and 6.7 percent depending on the municipality, has recently been instituted in Puerto Rico, and hotel taxes can vary depending on the type of property. Hotels with casinos charge 11 percent tax, and hotels without casinos charge 9 percent tax. There may also be resort fees, energy surcharge fees, and other charges. When determining the price of a hotel room, ask whether or not the tax is included in the stated price.
Tipping practices are the same as in the United States—15–20 percent of the bill, unless a gratuity has already been added.
