On the east side of La Ermita [1] is the Casa Galeano (9 a.m.–6 p.m. daily, US$1.60), the former colonial residence of a prominent longtime Gracias [2] family. Nicely restored with the help of the Spanish government, the Casa Galeano now houses a simple museum on the region, worth the small admission fee for a quick look. Admission also includes entry to the unimpressive botanical garden behind the house.
The Galeano family now resides in another building, and Eduardo “Mito” Galeano is a respected Honduran painter who will sometimes show visitors samples of his work—ask around to find his nearby workshop. Many of Galeano’s paintings take as their subject matter village life in western Honduras [3].
