For anyone enraptured, as I am, by the classic art of the Southwest—from the photographs of Edward Curtis to the modernist illustrations of Maynard Dixon; from the ceremonial kachinas of the Hopi people to the elegant yellow-brown pottery of Nampeyo—Mark Sublette’s Medicine Man Gallery on the east side is an absolute must-visit.
The huge gallery also features the Maynard Dixon Museum, with a wide selection of often obscure paintings, illustrations, and ephemera from throughout the great artist’s career. There’s also a contemporary art gallery here featuring the best in new Western art by the likes of the fabulous Navajo artist Shonto Begay.
