Housed in a beautifully renovated colonial home, the Elisa Burkhard Contemporary Art Museum-Gallery (Calle Yajalón 2, no phone, www.museoelisa.wordpress.com [1], 3–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun., free) is a welcome addition to San Cristóbal [2]’s nascent modern-art scene. Three large exhibition rooms feature photography, sculptures, and paintings, most by local and expatriate artists.
The gallery also has open-air sculpture and garden areas, a small café, workshop, and a projection room in the works.
Galería Studio Cerrillo (Calle Tonalá 19-A, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Tues.–Sun., best to call ahead) is a one-room modern-art gallery at Sol y Luna Guest Inn (Calle Tonalá 27 at Calle Pichicalco, tel. 967/678-5727, www.solylunainn.com [3]). It hosts an oft-changing lineup of installation and performance pieces, many by international artists.
Located just steps from the central plaza, the Galería de Arte Fotográfico Albertina (Av. Insurgentes 1-A, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4–8 p.m. Mon.–Sat., free) is a one-room affair with regularly changing photo exhibits. It has a great little gift shop with Chiapanecan artesanía, paintings, and framed photos of local scenery and people. A sculpture garden in the adjoining courtyard is planned for 2010.
