Home to Las Estrellas Orientales baseball team and some of the most elite players in the country, the Tetelo Vargas Stadium (Av. Circunvalación, www.estrellasorientales.com.do [1], tel. 809/246-4077) is the most well-known building in town. Boys who used to play stickball in the campo, with their makeshift milk-carton gloves, are now the graceful, competitive, and hungry-for-success Eastern Stars, as their name translates.
Baseball season in the Dominican Republic [2] is October–January. If you don’t speak Spanish, ask at your hotel for tickets to a game and a taxi to take you. However, if you do speak Spanish, show up at the box office nice and early on the day of the game; you can get a ticket for about US$20 for front-row seats or about US$2 for bleacher seats.
Games are usually at night. Schedules are available at the Estrellas Orientales website.
