All the Playa Dorada [1] resorts offer countless excursions like diving, snorkeling, fishing, and even some farther-reaching tours that will take you all the way to Santo Domingo [2]. It is best to check with the excursion desk at your resort for these options.

The main sporting attraction off the beach is the 18-hole championship, par-72 Playa Dorada Golf Club (Playa Dorada, tel. 809/320-3472, www.playadoradagolf.com [3], 7 a.m.–7 p.m.). Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., it wraps around the entire Playa Dorada resort complex and along the coast. Anyone can enjoy the on-site restaurant and bar, golfer or not. Greens fees are US$50 for 9 holes and US$75 for 18 holes. Caddies (US$8 for 9 and US$15 for 18 holes) are obligatory, whereas carts (US$18 for 9 holes and US$24 for 18 holes) are optional. It is best to book your tee time through your resort since many of them offer special rates.

Fun City Action Park (Carretera Puerto Plata–Sosúa Km 8, tel. 809/320-1031, www.funcity-gokarts.com [4], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Mon.–Fri., 10 a.m.–9 p.m.Sat. and Sun.) is only 10 minutes from Puerto Plata [1]. Most kids can get fussy with resort life if there isn’t much diversion; if that is the case with yours, take them to this multiple-track go-cart racing complex. There are bumper cars also and a playground for the younger children (2–8 years old). Fun City has a free taxi service from your hotel. Day passes cost US$15 for adults and US$10 for kids 12 and under. Price includes unlimited rides, but food and drinks are not included.
