There are two good beaches near San Cristóbal [1], and both are a fun option for a day in the sun, especially if you are staying in Santo Domingo [2] and need a break. Since most people in the capital who want a beach getaway head toward the east to Boca Chica [3] and Juan Dolio [4], going west makes for a more authentic and unique day trip. If you need to take a guagua from San Cristóbal, regular service leaves from the Parque Central to both Najayo and Palenque beaches.
Playa Najayo is 14 kilometers south of San Cristóbal on Carretera Palenque and followed six kilometers farther along by Playa Palenque. These beaches are especially popular hangouts for local families on the weekends and holidays. It is customary to order drinks or food if you plan to park yourself at one of the tables. Even if you have brought your own cooler of drinks/food, don’t be surprised if you are asked to place an order.
The seafood is very fresh and fried perfectly. You can often get it in a combo plate with rice and plátano frito (fried plantains) on the side. Add an ice cold Presidente to that and you have a nice day at the beach!
