Breakfast and brunch are a big hit at the Icebox Cafe (1657 Michigan Ave., 305/538-8448, breakfast 8 a.m.–11 a.m. Mon.–Fri., brunch 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Sat.–Sun., lunch 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon.–Fri., dinner 6–11 p.m. daily, breakfast and brunch from $5, lunch and dinner from $19), but lunch and dinner are also a great option at this stylish bistro. Although it is a little pricey, the frequently changing selection of fresh fish dishes, steaks, gourmet burgers, and even a few Southeast Asian delicacies is dependably excellent.
As you can probably surmise, the 8 Oz. Burger Bar (1080 Alton Rd., 305/397-8246, 11 a.m.–midnight Sun.–Wed., 11 a.m.–2 a.m. Thurs.–Sat., main courses from $8) specializes in monstrous gourmet hamburgers. The standard house burger is a combination of ground chuck, sirloin, and short-rib meat, and turkey burgers, veggie burgers, and fish-filet sandwiches are also available. Toppings range from escarole and arugula to garlic-roasted tomatoes, sunflower sprouts, and, of course, standard condiments. Worth deviating from the burger menu for: a short-rib–grilled cheese sandwich, as well as appetizers like cheese curds, deviled eggs, and a Kobe-beef corndog.
