The atmosphere and attitude on beautiful Sanibel and Captiva are surprisingly low-key. Granted, there are dozens of multimillion-dollar homes scattered throughout the islands, and some of the hotels and resorts charge astronomical rates for relatively basic accommodations, but such upmarket accoutrements mask a beach bum’s paradise.
The only way onto Sanibel and Captiva Islands by car is via the toll bridge, which is 20 miles (about an hour’s drive) from downtown Fort Myers [1]. The toll is $6.
Sanibel Island is great for cyclists, with bike trails throughout the flat and easily navigable island, and truly intrepid riders can even make their way along the nine-mile route to Captiva; once there, however, bike lanes are limited.
