Antiques hunters, take note: About five miles south of downtown Portland [1] on the east banks of the Willamette River is the old working class neighborhood of Sellwood. Once a separate city, it was annexed to Portland in 1890. The entire neighborhood, especially along SE 13th Avenue between Marion and Malden Streets, is filled with over 30 antiques stores and malls crammed with collectables.
Begin your shopping at 1874 House (8070 SE 13th Ave., 503/233-1874, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Sat.), more or less in the thick of it along the so-called Antique Row. Sellwood is five miles south of downtown off Milwaukie Boulevard; take bus number 70 from the Rose Quarter.
Sellwood also offers access to wetlands along the Willamette River. Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is a 163-acre area of woods, open fields, and wetlands. This is a popular spot for birders as it attracts some 125 species of birds, including blue herons, red-tailed hawks, and eight species of warblers.
