There are a lot of hotels at I-205 Exit 23, the exit for PDX airport. Except on holiday weekends, you probably won’t need reservations, but here are a few options from all price categories if you want to call ahead.
A 12-minute ride from the airport by free shuttle is Quality Inn (8247 NE Sandy Blvd., 503/256-4111 or 800/424-6423, www.choicehotel.com [1], $80 and up). Located near The Grotto [2] with its old-growth trees and contemplative surroundings, it’s a world away from airport terminal traffic snarls. Better yet, it’s halfway between the airport and downtown with easy access via city bus. While the rooms are typical of moderately priced chains, the free breakfast and other amenities make it a good choice.
The Country Inn and Suites (7025 NE Alderwood Rd., 503/255-2700 or 888/987-2700, www.countryinns.com [3], $80 and up) is a 150-room hotel with a pool, a spa, a fitness center, and well-appointed guest rooms. A free airport shuttle and breakfast are also available.
Courtyard by Marriott (11550 NE Airport Way, 503/252-3200 or 800/321-2211, www.marriott.com [4], $139 and up) offers rooms with microwaves, wet bars, and other appreciated extras. A restaurant, a pool, and spa facilities are also on-site. It’s three miles east of the airport with 24-hour free shuttle service to the terminal.
The closest hotel to the airport, Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel (8253 NE Airport Way, 503/281-2500 or 800/325-3535, www.sheraton.com/portland [5], $129 and up), is pretty classy, with oversized well-furnished rooms, an indoor pool, a fitness center, room service, a restaurant, and a small conference center. Free shuttles run to the airport terminal 24-7.
