The 4.5-mile Ramona Falls loop trail to a stunning waterfall is one of the most popular on Mount Hood [1]. From the trailhead, it initially parallels the Sandy River. In a little more than a mile you’ll come to a seasonal bridge over the river with a pretty view of Mount Hood. On the other side of the river, Trail 797 will get you to Ramona Falls in about 2 miles.
The grade of the slope is gentle throughout, and while much of the trail isn’t especially scenic (except for the bridge over the Sandy River, June rhododendrons, and views of Mount Hood), Ramona Falls itself makes it all worthwhile.
Here a multitude of cascades course over a 100-foot-high, 50-foot-wide series of basalt outcroppings. This weeping wall is set in a grove of gargantuan Douglas firs. The spray beneath this canopy of trees can drop the temperature 20°F, making the place a popular retreat on hot summer days.
This trail connects with the Pacific Crest Trail, and backpackers often use it as part of a longer trip.
To reach Ramona Falls, drive 18 miles east of Sandy on U.S. 26 to Lolo Pass Road, close by the ranger station. Turn left (north) and go 5 miles up Lolo Pass Road; stay right onto Forest Service Road 1825. From here, you’ll take the road about 4 miles to its end.
