Adelsheim (16800 NE Calkins Lane, 503/538-3652), founded in 1971, was one of the first Willamette Valley [1] wineries. From their lovely setting on the slopes of the Chehalem Mountains, the Adelsheims have continued to produce good wine.
Another family-owned winery, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars (15771 NE Ribbon Ridge Rd., 503/554-5545, Thurs.–Sun.), is typical of the small quality-driven pinot wineries.
Two miles east of Newberg, Rex Hill Vineyards (30835 Rte. 99W, 800/739-4455) highlights pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, and Riesling. Persian rugs, antiques, an ornately carved front door, and a lit fireplace extend a warm welcome to visitors. In warm weather, the garden beckons. Try the winery’s excellent pinot gris.
