Much of Oregon [1]’s early history played out near the banks of the Willamette River between present-day Portland [2] and Salem [3]. Settlers made a break from the British Hudson’s Bay Company and established a pro-American provisional government. The fertile land was also the destination of Oregon Trail pioneers.
Over 150 years later these Willamette Valley [4] towns are still mostly small, and the surrounding countryside is lush, inviting a ramble through history.
