Each spring, the University of Oregon [1] track team, a perennial contender for the status of best team in the nation, holds meets at Hayward Field (Agate St. and 15th Ave.). This site has also hosted such world-class events as the National Collegiate Athletic Association Finals and the United States Olympic Trials.
Fall means Duck football at Autzen Stadium (Martin Luther King Blvd. on Day Island). To get there, head north on Ferry Street; just after crossing the Willamette River, take a hard right on Martin Luther King Boulevard.
In winter, the townsfolk cram into MacArthur Court, a funky anachronism from the 1920s located just south of the physical education building on University Street. Even if you’re not a fan, you’re bound to get caught up in the frenzied decibels of “quacker backers” who support a team known for its never-say-die attitude.
In summer, the Eugene Emeralds play ball at Civic Stadium (2077 Willamette St., 541/342-5367), for honor, glory, and a chance to break into the big leagues. Even if you don’t catch a future hall-of-famer on the way up, enjoy the best concession food you’ll ever taste at a ballpark.
