Stay right in downtown Astoria [1] in the beautifully renovated
Hotel Elliott (357 12th St., 877/378-1924, www.hotelelliott.com [2], $169 and up), a tiny boutique hotel that’s an easy walk from good restaurants and the river. The Elliott first opened in 1924, and its current incarnation has preserved much of the original charm of its Craftsman-era details, including the mahogany-clad lobby, handcrafted cabinetry, and wood and marble fireplaces.
An original banner painted across the hotel’s north side proudly proclaims Hotel Elliott—Wonderful Beds. The new Elliott has made a point of living up to this claim, with goose-down pillows, luxurious 440-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, feather beds, and top-of-the-line mattresses to ensure a memorable slumber.
In addition to standard rooms, the Elliott has a variety of suites (from $279 nightly), including the five-room Presidential Suite ($650) with access to a rooftop garden. The rooftop is open to all and is a fine place to enjoy a glass of wine and the sunset.
