To sample the work of area artists, check out the Ryan Gallery (4270 N. U.S. 101, 541/994-5391) and Earthworks Galleries (620 NE U.S. 101, 541/557-4148). South of town at Salishan, the Lawrence Gallery (7755 U.S. 101 N., 541/764-2318) is a high-end gallery that’s lots of fun to visit.

With some 65 shops, the Tanger Outlet Center (1500 SE East Devil’s Lake Rd., 541/996-5000), near the south end of town, is the largest outlet mall on the Oregon coast and has become something of a regional destination. Shops here include the ones you’d expect—London Fog, Samsonite, Eddie Bauer—plus such regional treats as the wine bar–deli at Sip (541/557-9463), where you can sample Oregon wines, and Pendleton Woolen Mills (541/994-2496).

Catch the Wind (266 SE U.S. 101, 541/994-9500) sells kites, windsocks, and all the materials you need to create your own colorful flying contraption. It’s conveniently close to the D River Wayside [1], site of Lincoln City [2]’s summer and fall kite festivals.

Glass Art

Spend a rainy day learning to blow a glass float or paperweight at the Lincoln City Glass Center (4821 SW U.S. 101, 541/996-2569, www.lcglasscenter.com [3], 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Wed.–Sun., classes $75 and up). Kids ages 8–10 may participate with parental supervision. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and no fleece!

About four miles south of town, near Salishan, you can watch the glass blowers at Alder House (611 Immonen Rd., 541/994-6485, www.alderhouse.com [4], 10 a.m.–5 p.m. daily mid-Mar.–Thanksgiving weekend) and buy floats, paperweights, or other glass creations at very reasonable prices.

If your taste runs more toward glass figurines, stop downtown at Glass Confusion (1610 NE U.S. 101, 541/994-4700, www.glassconfusion.net [5]). It’s a working studio, a store, and a place to take classes.
