Of Depoe Bay [1]’s several restaurants, Tidal Raves (279 NW U.S. 101, 541/765-2995, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. daily, $8–22) has the best combination of flavor, views, and casual ambiance. A number of seafood dishes take on an Asian twist, such as Thai barbequed shrimp or udon noodles with sesame-crusted scallops. A pasta dish features crab, shrimp, lingcod, snapper, and more on a bed of linguine with pesto. The Dungeness crab casserole is also noteworthy for its flavor as well as its cholesterol level–improving properties.
Restaurant Beck (2345 S. U.S. 101, 541/765-3220, 4:30–9 p.m. Wed.–Mon., $22–28), in the Whale Cove Inn south of town, is Depoe Bay’s only really elegant restaurant. It has a great view and excellent food, much of which originates on nearby farms. Be prepared to experiment in a way that’s not too scary…order an appetizer of a poached egg over roasted asparagus or watermelon and crab “tartare.” Seasonal ingredients figure prominently; in June, Rainier cherries pair with ancho chilies on top of a lamb loin.
