Huckleberry picking is another attraction just outside town. Some prime pickings are found about five miles north of Florence [1] along the Sutton Creek Trail, which begins in the Sutton campground just off U.S. 101.
During late summer or fall, these berries flourish below the dense canopy of shore pines. Rhododendrons bloom in profusion mid-May–early June. In addition to these delights, you can hike through the dunes [2], which are broken up by several freshwater lakes.
