Humbug Mountain State Park [1] (541/332-6774), six miles south of Port Orford [2], features 80 tent sites and 30 sites for trailers and motor homes ($14–16), and wind-protected sites reserved for hikers and bikers ($4). Flush toilets, showers, picnic tables, water, and firewood are available.

Arizona Beach Campground (15 miles north of Gold Beach [3] on U.S. 101, 541/332-6491, $14–20) is a 70-acre campground close to a beach with lots of driftwood. It has 31 tent sites and almost 100 RV spaces. You can camp on the beach, in an adjoining meadow, or back in the woods by a tiny stream. All the amenities are here, but the closely spaced sites lack privacy. Nonetheless, there are few better places for kids because of the creek running though the site and the proximity of the Prehistoric Gardens [4]. It’s open all year, and reservations are needed only during holidays.

Cape Blanco State Park [5] (39745 U.S. 101 S., 541/332-6774 information, 800/452-5687 cabin reservations) can be reached by driving four miles north of Port Orford [2] on U.S. 101, then heading northwest on the park road that continues five miles beyond to the campground. It features 54 tent sites ($16), four cabins ($35), trailer and motor home sites ($16), a horse camp ($14), and hiker-biker sites ($4); picnic tables, water, and showers are available. For horseback riders, there’s a seven-mile trail and a huge open riding area; horses are also allowed on the beach. Regular sites are first-come, first-served.
