About 10 miles south of Grants Pass [1] on I-5 is the House of Mystery at the Oregon Vortex (4303 Sardine Creek Rd., Gold Hill, 541/855-1543, www.oregonvortex.com [2], 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily Mar.–May and Sept.–Oct., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily June–Aug., $9 adults, $8 seniors, $7 children ages 6–11).
Called the “Forbidden Ground” by the Rogue Native American people because the place spooked their horses, it is actually in a repelling geomagnetic field where objects tend to move away from their center of alignment and lean in funny directions.
For example, a ball at the end of a string does not hang straight up and down, and people seem taller when viewed from one side of the field as opposed to the other.
Visitors may bring balls, levels, cameras (but not movie cameras), or any other instrument they wish to test the vortex for themselves.
