With all the lakes, rivers, and mountains in the region, there’s no shortage of fishing, rafting, golfing, and other recreational opportunities. Here’s a short list of some local attractions.
Local guides can get you outfitted and on the water angling for the elusive big one. Darren Roe Guide Service (4849 Summers Lane, 541/884-3825 or 877/943-5700, www.roeoutfitters.com [1]) offers trips on the Klamath Lakes and the nearby Wood and Willamson Rivers, noted for their runs of wild trout. Rates are roughly $200 per person for 2–3 people per day, or $275–350 per single person per day.
One way to get out onto Oregon’s largest lake is to rent a sailboat through Meridian Sail Center (Pelican Marina, Dock C, 928 Front St., 541/884-5869, www.meridiansail.com [2]). Sailboat rentals are $70–100 half-day, $100–140 full-day. Sailing instruction is also available. Call ahead for the sailing report and to make reservations.
Twenty miles (just under an hour’s drive) west of Klamath Falls [3] is what’s known as Hell’s Corner of the Upper Klamath River. Arrowhead River Adventures (720 Greenleaf Dr., Eagle Point, 541/830-3388 or 800/227-7741, www.arrowheadadventures.com [4]) offers daylong trips ($149) through this remote secluded canyon June–September. With several Class IV-plus rapids, the Upper Klamath provides some of the best spring and summer rafting in the state.
You can also arrange a raft trip in the Upper Klamath River canyons through Ashland [5]’s Adventure Center (40 N. Main St., Ashland, 800/444-2819, www.raftingtours.com [6]). In addition to a day trip ($135, includes transportation to and from Ashland), they offer a two-day trip down the river with a night of fully catered riverside camping ($339).
There are several area courses open to the public. Harbor Links (601 Harbor Isle Blvd., 541/882-0609) and Shield Crest (3151 Shieldcrest Dr., 541/884-1493) both offer 9- and 18-hole courses with greens fees in the $25–45 range. The Running Y Ranch Resort (5500 Running Y Rd., 541/850-5500 or 888/850-0275, www.runningy.com [7], $70–125 for 9–18 holes) offers a 7,138-yard 18-hole course designed by Arnold Palmer.
