Another peak experience worth investigating is the Pine Mountain Observatory (541/382-8331, http://guernsey.uoregon.edu [1], Fri.–Sat. late May–Sept., $3 donation). Three Cassegrain telescopes with 15-, 24-, and 32-inch mirrors are used by University of Oregon professors and students to unlock the secrets of the universe.
On this 6,300-foot mountain the friendly astronomers will often allow visitors an intriguing peek at neighboring stars and planets. Call ahead for information and weather conditions before making the trip.
Programs start at 9 p.m. until midsummer; when darkness falls earlier, starting times are shifted to 8:30 p.m., then to 8 p.m. Wear warm clothes and take a flashlight.
Located about 40 miles east of Bend [2] on U.S. 20, take the road out of Millican to the top of 6,395-foot-high Pine Mountain to reach the Pine Mountain Observatory.
