The past lives on as more than a memory at the Warm Springs Indian Reservation (www.warmsprings.com [1]), which straddles U.S. 26 north of Madras [2]. Within the 600,000-acre reservation you can see the age-old practice of dip-net fishing on the Deschutes River, as well as the richest collection of Native American artifacts in the country at a 27,000-square-foot Museum at Warm Springs [3].
Along with these touches of tradition, the reservation is the embodiment of the modern-day American dream, successfully operating a dam, a resort hotel, and a lumber mill.
It’s interesting to note that the employees of these enterprises are the descendants of the same Native Americans who greeted Lewis and Clark and Deschutes explorers Peter Skene Ogden (in 1826), John Frémont, and Kit Carson (both in 1843).
