Now one of Missouri’s largest locally owned breweries, Boulevard Brewing Company began in 1988 when founder John McDonald began building a brewing facility on Southwest Boulevard. Boulevard began producing beer in 1989 with a keg of Pale Ale, still a city favorite.
The brewery has since expanded to offer several year-round and limited-edition brews like Boulevard Wheat, Pale Ale, Irish Ale, and Pilsner, as well as the Smokestack Series, a group of complex, experimental ales including Double-Wide I.P.A. and Long Strange Tripel that have become mainstays on bar taps and in restaurant refrigerators throughout Kansas City [2] and surrounding Midwest region.
To drink anything other than Boulevard beer in Kansas City is akin to treason.
Boulevard relies on a vintage Bavarian brewhouse to create distinctive flavors found only in its carefully brewed beers, which are extensively taste-tested to ensure quality results.
Boulevard Brewing Co. tours are a popular Kansas City activity for residents and visitors alike. Tours are held Wednesday through Sunday at various times, but make your reservations as soon as you can: They often fill up weeks in advance.
While you’re on the tour you’ll hear about the history of the company, watch a video detailing the beer-making process, take a walking tour of the plant, and, when you’re finished, sample various Boulevard beers. The tour is free; reservations can be made by calling 816/474-7095.
