Once the home of Lawrence [1]’s elite, Old West Lawrence (bounded by Tennessee Street to the east, Indiana Street to the west, Sixth Street to the north and Eighth Street to the south) became a prime target for Quantrill’s vicious raiders.
Many homes were destroyed but several remained, and now the neighborhood has garnered several accolades including a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being a finalist in the nationwide “America’s Prettiest Painted Places” competition.
The stately homes are an enduring testament to Lawrence history, and worth a picturesque stroll accompanied by a self-guided tour, available at the Lawrence Visitors Center (402 N. 2nd St., 785/865-4499, www.visitlawrence.com [2]).
