Those with a vehicle or willing to try hitching should head south 22 miles to the Forest Service’s Ohmer Creek Campground ($6). This is a quiet place in a flower-filled meadow along Blind Slough, with water available. Not far away is the 0.25-mile-long wheelchair-accessible Ohmer Creek Trail, complete with interpretive signs. This is a beautiful old-growth rain forest walk, with steelhead fishing in the spring.
Twin Creek RV Park (907/772-3244, www.twincreekrv.com [1], RVs $28, tents $15) is seven miles south of town, and The Trees RV Park (907/772-2502, RVs $30) is 10 miles out, with an adjacent store and Laundromat.
